Reverse Smoking Burn
Reverse Smoking Burn
Reverse smoking is common practice in some parts of India and is also practiced in some Latin American countries, in Sardinia and in the Philippines where the lighted end of a cigar or cigarette is held inside the mouth.
What to look for
There can be many changes to the palate and or surface of the tongue, such as elevated white patches (leukoplakia), red areas (erythroplakia) and ulcerations. Cancers arise in this region with pre-existing changes, hence they are considered as precancerous.
Treatment
The best treatment is to stop the addictive habit of smoking.
In low resource countries smoking cessation initiatives need to be appropriate and affordable involving the community and it also be integrated into general healthcare services.
Risk
Smoking – in areas where reverse smoking is popular, oral cancer rates are high.
